Delta State Joins the global awareness campaign against drug abuse

The 26th of June 2023 has given global attention and Awareness to Prevention and Campaigns across nations, organizations, and communities on the commemoration of the international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Delta State was not left out of the event as the State drug control committee in collaboration with stakeholders in relevant agencies gathered at Government house Asaba the capital of Delta State to mark the day. The governor Honourable sheriff Oboroworo represented by the secretary to the state government Dr Kingsley Emu said the day was aimed at raising awareness about the detrimental effects of drug abuse and fostering collective action to combat substance abuse. The Wife of the Governor Mrs Tobore Oborevwori , represented by the deputy governor's wife Lady Catherine onyeme urged total engagement of Stakeholders at changing the narrative of illicit drug usage in the State, through awareness campaigns, support programs, policy discussions, and collaborative initiatives. She stated that the dangers of drug abuse could lead to insanity, imprisonment and death while suggesting the need to provide guidance, counseling, and a safe space for those struggling with addiction. The Delta State Commander Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Mr JohnTunde who spoke inline with the world drug day's theme"PEOPLE FIRST, STOP STIGMA AND DISCRIMINATION, STRENGTHEN PREVENTION" said the world drug day was a reminder to the global communities to address substance abuse by helping individuals affected by addiction, to prioritize prevention, treatment, and strive towards a healthier life style, before being reintegrated back to the society while also advising against stigmatization. A Lecture was delivered by the Delta State Deputy commander Saint-Christopher Owoeye on empowering individuals with knowledge about the risks associated with drug abuse and equipping them with strategies to make informed decisions, with a view to making significant impact in preventing drug abuse. The Chairperson State drug Control committee Mrs Comfort Olie thanked all present for making the event a success and underscored the importance of the day saying that informed decisions will be taken to prevent the use of illicit drugs.
