The need to Champion the rights and empowerment of person's living with disabilities has been brought to the front burner.
The Chairperson Governing Council of the Nigeria Bar Association Lawyers With Disability Forum Asia Ahmad El Rufai stated this at the maiden edition of the Nigerian Bar Association Lawyers with Disability Forum Stakeholders Summit on Disability Inclusion which held in Asaba the Delta State Capital.
She emphasized that in line with the theme of the summit, THE CRIMINALITY OF DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION: EVALUATING THE PREPAREDNESS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AND RELEVANT STAKEHOLDERS, was to Prepare the Law Enforcement Agencies and Stakeholders in Combating the Criminality of Disability Discrimination
Delivering the keynote address, the Chairman, 2023 NBA Annual General Conference Planning Committee Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN represented by Erelu Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya said the body recognized the need to address matters of discrimination, with stakeholders, security agencies and government and identify ways for improvement .
The National publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Bar Association Mr Habeeb Lawal commended States that have domesticated the law which Carter for person's living with disabilities.while stressing that the objective of the summit was to inform the members of the public on the need to promoting the rule of law.
Other speakers at the event including the Wife of the Governor of Delta State, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori represented by the Wife of the Speaker, Mrs Ebi Guwor focused on multiple aspects of the law crucial to combatting the criminality of disability discrimination while urging those with Disabilities to make themselves available in a bid to benefit from the various government programmes aimed at making life more meaningful.
