Delta State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) has organised a road walk in Asaba to commemorate the 2023 World Sight Day.
The road walk saw officials of the ministry, eye care givers and other stakeholders march along the popular Okpanam Road in Asaba to sensitise residents on the need to take care of their eyes.
The World Sight Day, celebrated every second Thursday in October, creates an opportunity to focus the world’s attention on the importance of eye care, raise public awareness on eye health and influence decision makers to prioritise eye health initiatives.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “love your eyes at work”.
Speaking on the importance of the event in a statewide broadcast, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, enjoined Deltans to place high premium on the care of their eyes.
“Good vision helps us work better and can improve our earning potentials. Therefore, together, we will encourage employers to make eye health initiatives a standard practice and promote eye health habits that will benefit the well-being, safety and productivity of millions of employees,” the commissioner stated.
According to the commissioner “initiatives taken by the state government to improve eye care was the free eye screening and provision of glasses for the staff of the Delta State Civil Service early this year, upgrading of facilities that provides comprehensive eye care services in the State owned hospitals, such as the Central hospitals Warri, Ughelli, Sapele, Agbor and Kwale, among others.
Programmes lined up simultaneously in the three senatorial districts of the state during the celebration included free eye screening and provision of glasses to Local Government workers at the council headquarters and other medical tests, using an integrated method in Malaria, Hypertension, Diabetes, Reproductive Health, Tuberculosis detention.
