The Director -General, Warri, Uwvie, and Environs Development Agency (WUEDA), Hon. Prince Godwin Ejinyere, has stressed the need for collective efforts towards creating awareness for people to provide adequate care for children living with dyslexia.
Ejinyere made the call in Asaba during the 2023 Dyslexia Stakeholders Conference and Awareness Campaign programme/presentation of patron awards, organised by Dyslexia Initiative Project Africa (DIPA) in collaboration with the Delta State Government.
While receiving a grand patron award from the organization, Ejinyere, commended the organisers of the programme and pledged to provide his modest contributions and support to the initiative.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Founder of Dyslexia Initiative Project Africa, Enddy Sunny-Udjor said that dyslexia was a common challenge faced by most individuals who struggled to learn in schools and explained that the essence of the stakeholders' awareness campaign was to brainstorm on the challenges children with dyslexia face with a view to sharing ideas on how to mitigate them.
She stated that in Africa, some people wrongly assumed that dyslexia was spiritual, lack of seriousness on the part of the child, stressing that the perception by some individuals believed it could be overgrown was not true.
Enddy Sunny-Udjor noted that the Dyslexia Initiative Project Africa(DIPA) began the journey of creating dyslexia awareness by advocating for inclusive and accommodating learning policies for persons with learning differences and lauded the State Government for its support thus far.
In their lecture presentations, Dean, School of Education, Federal College of Education (Technical) , Asaba, Dr. C. O onwubolu and Dr. Opene Rita , who is the State NNon-CommunicableDisease Programme Coordinator, Delta State Ministry of Health, urged special educators to be dyslexia-skilled in other to teach dyslexic children effectively and stressed the importance of showing love to them while teaching them .
Participants who spoke during the workshop, called for more awareness creation for people to be effectively informed about dyslexia and stressed that the Delta State Government to continue to support the initiative.
