The Delta Government has promised to strengthen its Central Office of Research and Statistics for better service delivery.
The state’s Commissioner for Economic Planning, Sunny Ekedayen stated this on Wednesday in Asaba when he declared open a two-day training/validation for personnel of government Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) involved in data collection.
Ekedayen, represented by the Director of Budgeting in the Ministry,Mr Thomson Olije, said that the government placed great premium on statistics, in recognition of the enormous task associated with data collection.
“It gives me great pleasure to be in your mids at the opening ceremony of a two-day workshop which has been put together for MDAs in public service involved in routine data collection and analysis.
”The importance of the training is underscored by the fact that quality data is very important in the process of statistical production and should be of top priority in any project.
”Any data produced timely and accurately is necessary for effective planning and progress of any economy,” he said.
He said that the workshop was to update the skills and understanding of the participants on the challenges associated with massive data requirement for driving the ” M.O.R.E agenda” initiative of Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori.
“I understand that’s one of the topics to be treated include an overview of the state Statistics Year Book (SYB) and methods of presentation.
”It is on record that your contributions were largely responsible for the success of several editions of the SYB in the history of our dear State and immense growth in development.
”While wishing you all very successful training and fruitful deliberations, it is my pleasure and privilege to declare this workshop open,” Ekedayen added.
Speaking, the State Director of Statistics, Ms Nkechi Maduemezia said the statistics year book was crucial for planning, hence its importance could not be over emphasised.
“I want you to look at the data from our different MDAs and correct them where necessary before publishing of the report, so that the wrong message is not sent to the public,” she said.
Maduemezia commended the government for its efforts in scaling up statistical activities in the state.
She listed some of the achievements recorded in the state in previous years to include, conduct of road traffic survey 2023, approval and computation of the state’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP).
