The Principal of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba, Dr. (Mrs.) Obiajulu C. Eboka, has asserted that the benefits of the annual inter -house sports and athletics competition is to create a platform for healthy competition among students, promote the spirit of sportsmanship and relaxation.
Dr. (Mrs.) Eboka , who stated this in her welcome address at the 7th Annual Inter-House Sport and Athletics Competition, held in Asaba under the chairmanship of Chief Obinna Iwegbuna.
She described sports as an integral part of co-curricular activities in the education that enhanced the physical and mental well-being of children and build their discipline and self confidence in them .
Dr. (Mrs.) Eboka said that the annual school Inter-house sports and athletics competition was an avenue for discovering and nurturing talents, adding that all over the world, both young and old usually leverage on sporting activities to showcase their gifts and talents in sports .
While commending the students of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba for their accomplishments in the National Youth Sports Festival in 2023 , Eboka said that her school cricket team that represented Delta State came out first position.
Dr. Eboka also disclosed that students of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba participated in the MTN CHAMP competition where their boys won the trophies as best performers in the U-14 and U-17 categories.
She explained that in the competition, students of her school won a total of 12 gold medals, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals for the state during the MTN sports competition.
The school Principal used the opportunity to solicit for financial support to enable the school provide the needed sports equipment and facilities such as basketball and volleyball courts , trophies, javelin, shot put and high jump poles among others.
Earlier, the State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Darlington Ijeh , who was represented by the Director of Administration in the Ministry, Mr. Kennedy Nwabueze lauded the principal of the school and the teachers for their efforts towards impacting positively on the children both in academics and sports.
In an interview with the Principal of Osadenis Mixed Secondary School, Mrs. Patience Aguonye and the Principal of Niger Mixed Secondary School, Mr. Benjamin Aseyeni , they described the Inter-house sports activities as rich and worthy of emulation in all ramifications .
Mrs. Aguonye and Mr. Aseyeni , who advised students to embrace all school activities holistically, urged parents to encourage their children to show interest in sports for their own benefits.
They stated that sports was an integral part of humanity that would promote unity among athletes.
