The Principal of Comprehensive Secondary School, Onicha-Uku in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr. Fidelis Uwadiegwu Onainor , has said that sports plays crucial role in the overall development of a child
Onainor, who stated this at Onicha-Uku during the 2024 Inter house Sports Competition , said that the day was set aside to showcase the talent and skills of students in various events .
The Principal described the event as an out of class activity that promotes teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship among peers as well as a good antidote for management of stress, anxiety and depression.
He said that Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education made it mandatory for schools to organize sporting activities in order to hunt for talents and appealed to parents and corporate bodies to assist schools through sportsmanships of sporting events.
Onainor said that students of the school recorded some remarkable achievements in sporting events , adding that school band and sports equipment had been provided to put their students on the same pedestal with students in city schools.
He said that the performance of their students in the last year's West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) was commendable and enjoined the students to be more committed to their studies.
The school principal lauded some prominent indigenes of Onicha-Uku community for their support towards complementing the efforts of the state government in providing a conducive teaching and learning environment for the school even as he appealed to the state government to fence the school so as to ensure more security for the students and teachers.
Earlier, the Oza of Onicha-Uku community and the patron of Pink house , Chief Patrick Ejiniwe , who called on government to provide critical intervention in the school, explained that in demonstration of the interest and love he had for the students, he built and equipped library and ICT Centre in the school as well as placed over 18 students in scholarship.
Speaking to newsmen, the Chief Inspector of Education (CIE) in charge of Aniocha North, Mrs. Kate Ebijuwa , represented by the sports officer in the CIE's office, Mrs. Rita Ugbo-Fred , the Vigilante Chairman of Onicha-Uku community, Mr. Felix Onuwa , the school Bursar, Lady Angela Okonkwo and Barr. Chukwuka Odu said that they were satisfied with the pace of development in the school.
They enjoined students in the school to desist from things that could jeopardize their future but imbibe reading culture at all times, saying that education was the cradle of development .
