The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to remove barriers hindering healthcare workers from seeking opportunities abroad.
This appeal was made by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, during the 11th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) in Abuja.
Comrade Ajaero emphasized the necessity of removing these obstacles due to the difficult socioeconomic conditions faced by workers and the general population in the country. He highlighted the increasing inaccessibility of healthcare services to the average Nigerian, further exacerbating an already dire situation.
Comrade Ajaero also underscored the repercussions of the growing exodus of healthcare professionals and workers from the nation, attributing it not only to the pursuit of improved living standards but also to the quest for self-actualisation and job satisfaction.
The conference, held under the theme "The Nigerian Health System in the Era of Economic Downturn: Challenges and Way Forward," included the election of a new National Executive Committee to oversee the affairs of the union.
Comrade Goodluck Oforbruku, the Chairman of NLC Delta State, was elected as the National Deputy President of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria.
In his remarks, Comrade Oforbruku expressed gratitude to the medical and health workers for their overwhelming support in his election.
He urged government at all levels to address the issues plaguing the health sector.
Additionally, the State NLC Secretary, Comrade Acrobat Enekhawore, Delta State Chairman of Medical and health workers, Comrade Okonye Onyemazuwa, and Delta State Chairman and Secretary of RATTAWU, Charles Enegide and Comrade Edwin Ekpri ,described the election of Comrade Goodluck Oforbruku as the National Deputy President of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria as an attestation to his unwavering commitment and dedication to improving workers' welfare.
