The need for parents to teach their children their cultural heritage at all times has been brought to the fore .
The Principal of Oduke Mixed Secondary School, Oduke , Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State , Mrs. Matha-Gold Omonigho stated this during their 2024 Cultural Day Celebration.
Mrs. Omonigho, who said that there was no separation between culture and man's existence in the society, described culture as an art just as she noted that Africa was blessed with rich cultural heritage .
While saying that a people could be identified by their food, language, the way they dress , their music and the way they dance , Mrs. Omonigho harped on the need for people to preserve and protect their culture.
In their separate remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Rt. Hon. Basil Ganagana, represented by Dr. Newman Richards , a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the husband of the Principal, Mr. John-David Akpovona Omonigho, the Principal of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba, Dr. Mrs. Obiajulu Eboka, her counterpart in charge of Zappa Mixed Secondary School, Asaba, Mrs. Roseline Ogbokor and the PTC Chairman for the school , Mr. Chukwudebelu Nwaemeka said that cultural day of the school provided the students the platform to showcase their culture.
Mr. Omonigho said that cultural display and sports were part of extra curricular activities that would enable the children to be physically and mentally healthy to boost their academic performance.
They explained that culture was important in the learning process of the children, adding that it was unfortunate that most children were not aware of their culture and traditions.
Speaking further, Dr. Mrs. Eboka ,the Principal of Government Model Secondary School said that culture was the identity of a people, stressing that through the knowledge of their culture the children would know more about their food, the way they dress, their language and music among other identities of their people.
They advised children to always understand and respect their culture and commended the Principal of Oduke Mixed Secondary School for organizing the Cultural Day Celebration which they affirmed had given the children the opportunity to display different cultural identity.
On her part, a Senior Special Assistant to Delta State Governor on Media Mrs. Gene Igbogidi , who was accompanied by Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Comrade Weyinmi Ufuoma Onovughakpo said that what the school had put together was in line with the M.O.R.E Agenda of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori led administration and lauded the Principal for organizing the event.
At the end of the event which featured cultural dance of different tribes, catching the flight dance attire , food exhibition and egg race for junior boys and girls among other activities, Red House emerged winner , followed by the Green House that settled for the second position while the White House took the third position.
