The South South Traditional Rulers forum have sued for the development of the region,
The traditional rulers stated this at the 13th Extra ordinary General Assembly, South South Monarchs Forum, with the theme: Strengthening Stakeholders Collaboration for development in the South South region, the role of the Traditional Rulers.
The event held in Asaba the Delta State Capital had in attendance the governor of Delta State Honourable Sheriff Oborevweri.
Speaking at the event governor Oborevweri charged the Traditional rulers to build pillars of integrity and fairness, stressing that there was need for every Monarchy to uphold justice and mediate in times of conflicts without being partial.
He advised the Traditional Rulers to embrace peace and work towards the improvement of educational innovations, as well as "promote inclusiveness, by ensuring that every voice is heard and every individual is valued while calling on all to work closely with the government and private organisations to bring developmental projects to the regions especially in areas of infrastructure, healthcare and education.
On the challenges facing development in the South-South region, governor Oborevweri identified environmental decay as a major factor of concern.
The governor commended the Monarchs for putting in place what he called "a perfected utilization of Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanism to avoid the longer process of litigation".
The Secretary to the government of Federation, George Akume who lamented the sorry State of the region despite being the source of the nation's revenue , tasked the Traditional Rulers to protect their environment.
He said although no role has been assigned to the Monarchs, but they need to help in environmental protection.
Mr Akume who was represented by Sen. Dr. Jack Tilley-Gyado, urged the monarchs to advice the youth in their domains to desist from illegal bunkering, vandalism and other criminal activities in the region.
Earlier, the Chairman of Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, Major General Felix Mujekpero (Rtd.) said the vision of the Forum was to cross fertilise ideas that would help combat insecurity, under-development and promote peaceful co-existence.
The Chairman, South South Monarchs Forum, King Dr. Edmund Daukoru, Ningi XII, Amanyanabo of Nembe Kingdom gave the historical origin of the forum, saying the Forum was conceived in 2009 in Port Harcourt and was inaugurated a year later at Uyo.
He noted that Nigeria's developmental shortcomings were due to lack of cooperation and synergy between stakeholders, noting that there was lack of consultation with traditional institutions by almost all tiers of government.
