TIMELY EXPOSURE OF STUDENTS TO SPORTS HELPS IN DIVERTING THEIR MINDSET FROM VICES, SAYS OFUASIA

The Principal of Oruchi Comprehensive Secondary School, Okpanam in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, Mrs. Theresa Awele Ofuasia, has said that timely and proper exposure of students to sports would help in diverting their mindset from all forms of social vices.

Mrs. Ofuasia, who  made the assertion in Okpanam on the occasion of the 6th Annual Inter-House Sports/Sports Carnival Competition, listed such vices to include cultism,  drug addiction and abuse , prostitution , gangsterism and  armed robbery among others.

She commended the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led administration for the holistic efforts in enhancing teaching and learning in the state.

Mrs. Ofuasia said that their 2024 Annual Inter-House Sports Athletics Competition would feature cultural display parade, 100m Junior Boys and Girls, 100m Senior Boys and Girls  and football final that was participated by all the Houses .
The Principal noted that football was not just a sport but a global phenomenon that had captured the interest and mindset of the people all over the world, adding that football has the tenacity to bring  people together, inspire passion and create unforgettable moment of joy and celebration.

She appealed to well meaning individuals and organisations to support the school with sporting equipment including school band and  trophies to encourage the students to have interest in sports.

Earlier, the Patron of White House and the Delta State Chairman of Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) , Comrade Emmanuel Edozie said that sports played key role in strengthening the disciplining of students, stressing that it was not only academics that the students should be engaged on but other extra curricular activities that were also part of the school curriculum.

Edozie, who  explained that sports helps the children to move away from social vices, said that sports was good for the children as it was beneficial to them in the area of growth and physical well-being.

The event was attended by the Principal of Okpanam High School, Mr. Dickson Williams and other principals neighboring public secondary schools in Oshimili North.

At the end of the competition, White House took the overall best position with the Yellow House emerging the best in match past  while the Yellow House also triumphed in the finals of the football competition.
