World Health Organization (WHO) has called on government at all levels and stakeholders involved in the upbringing of a child to show concern over the increase in teenage pregnancy.
Dr. Faith Ireye stated this at a one day programme titled , Delivery Innovation in Self Care 1.0; State Level Projects Desimination in collaboration with Society for family Health held in Asaba,
WHO State coordinator, Dr. Faith Ireye said the adolescent pregnancy within 14 and 19 years age in Delta State has become worrisome.
Dr. Ireye said currently over 4 percent of pregnant female in the State could be traced to adolescent females.
She said there was need for information Desimination about family planning, while calling on government to take decisive action by way of educating the girl child in order to reduce the adolescent pregnancy to the barest minimum.
Delta Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, said the meeting was necessary to enable stakeholders reflect on the accomplishments of the project, discuss its impact and chart a way forward.
According to the commissioner, who spoke through the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Philomena Okeowo, noted that DISC project is funded by the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF).
Earlier, the Deputy Team Lead, DISC Project, SFH, Mopelola Raji, said the project was aimed at changing the way self-care contraception was perceived.
According to her, the DISC project is a four-year project funded by CIFF and implemented by Population Services International and SFH.
