Case managers of Gender Based Violence (GBV) have been urged to always be survivor centered and have the interest of the survivor at heart when handling cases of gender base violence.
The National Monitoring and Evaluation Manager of a Civil Society Organization for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN), Lovelyn Agbor-Gabriel gave the admonition in Asaba during the opening ceremony of a two day step-down training on GBV case management.
She stated that the training was for case managers and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) working under the ACOMIN project in collaboration with other ATM networks that were coordinating issues around malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis in Delta State.
Agbor-Gabriel said that gender base violence was any harmful act metted against a person on the basis of their gender, noting that such violence could either come from a man to a woman or a woman to another woman.
She said that the issue of gender base violence was a global phenomenon and not particular to Nigeria or Delta State
Agbor-Gabriel also advised the case managers and CBOs to understand the ethical consideration around them and the guiding principles of dealing with any case, just as she implored survivors of gender base violence to speak out and report their cases in order for them to get justice .
One of the resource persons and the national Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, ACOMIN, Mr. Olayinka Peter disclosed that the essence of the training was to reorient the case managers working in the 5 local government areas in Delta State including Oshimili South, Oshimili North, Udu, Uvwie and Warri South.
He said that they have been working since June when they participated in the outreach campaign on gender base violence to enlighten the communities and the people on the need for them to speak out when they see anybody undergoing emotional, physical and economical trauma.
In his remarks, the Delta State Chairman of ACOMIN, Pastor Greg Sifo posited that the issue of gender base violence had become a menace in the society and told the participants to be attentive and take the training seriously.
Pastor Sifo, who said that there need to reach out to people to carry out advocacies so as to create awareness on the issue of gender base violence, enjoined the case managers and CBOs to carry out their responsibility in line with the objectives of the project.
In an interview with newsmen, the State Programme Officer for ACOMIN, Juliet Obiajulu said that event was designed for them to be abreast with the happenings on gender based violence and gender human rights.
She stated that training would help to strengthen the participants including the representative of Ministry of Women Affairs, Ministry of Health, FIDA, the Police and the Civil Defense as well as other case managers to be able to achieve results by ensuring that survivors of GBV received justice.
The resource persons made presentations on various including legal and ethical framework on GBV; Consent ; Survivor Centred Approach and GBV/GHR Case Management among others topics.
