Delta State Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, has urged adult education supervisors and facilitators to impact meaningfully on the lives of second chance learners through commitment to their responsibility.
Dr. Ashibogwu stated this in Asaba during a capacity building workshop for supervisors and facilitators from Delta South Senatorial District.
He said that the training was aimed at strengthening them with requisite skills and knowledge with which to deliver their functions effectively.
Dr. Ashibogwu stated that people should shun the impression that second chance learners may not actualize their potentials to become practitioners in different fields of human endeavors and commended the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for graciously approving the capacity building workshop.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Director of the Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education, Mr. Anthony Akponovo said that the Agency was established by law to provide second chance education and life skills opportunities to create awareness for youths and adults in the state who had earlier lost their chances of acquiring formal education.
Akponovo explained that the Agency was aimed at reducing the level of illiteracy between the populace by providing access to education and vocational skills for life long living.
He said that the experiences that would be gained from participating in the training programme would go a long way to positively impact in discharging their duties.
In her lecture presentation on the overview of adult literacy programme in Delta State, the resource person, Dr.(Mrs.) Isioma Edozie said that the primary goals of adult education was to improve literacy and basic skills, enhance career and employment prospects and promote personal growth and development as well as foster civic engagement and community involvement.
Dr. Edozie stated that adult literacy programme in Delta State and Nigeria played a vital role in promoting literacy and skills development among adults just as she recommended increased funding for adult literacy programmes, capacity building for adult education practitioners and community engagement and mobilisation fir programme support.
