Delta State Government, has supported the family of a deceased teacher of Alihame Mixed Secondary School, Alihame, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Late Mr. Sunday Ufah with the sum of two million five hundred thousand naira and scholarship to four children of the deceased.
Presenting the cheque to the wife of the deceased , Mrs. Christiana Ufah, the State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu said that the gesture was designed to show government's support to the family and described the incident that led to the death of the teacher as quite unfortunate.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro stated that in October, 2023 , the state and Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in particular recorded a tragic incident in the school system.
Oghoro said that shortly after the death of the teacher, the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori directed the Ministry to immediately pay condolence visit to the family of the deceased teacher.
He explained that the governor had approved the sum of two million five hundred thousand naira to support the family, adding that the governor said that the state government would take up the education of the children.
The PS noted that in demonstration of the pronouncement, Governor Oborevwori approved scholarship award to four children of the deceased teacher to enable them actualize their educational dream.
Oghoro noted that the gesture was facilitated by the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu.
In his remarks, the Delta State Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comr. Dan Basime appreciated Governor Oborevwori for the magnanimity, stressing that the role played by the commissioner in facilitating the kindness was commendable.
Basime said that their deceased colleague died in active service to the state and stressed the need for the scholarship to be effectively implemented, emphasizing that it was an indication that the state government was ready to provide support to her employees whenever problem occurred.
He described the initiative as a morale booster to those that were still in service and encouragement for them to continue to put in their best .
The Executive Secretary, Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, Dr. Godfrey Enita, who was represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics in the Board, Mr. Solomon Igbriwi urged the family of the deceased to furbish the Board with necessary information to enable carry out critical documentation needed for the smooth implementation of the scholarship.
He asserted that the Board had skill programme for children of deceased civil servants just as he lauded the state governor for supporting the family.
Present were the Chairman of NUT, Ika North East Chapter, Comr. Clement Ofuonyeabuna, his counterpart in charge of Ika South, Comr. Isaac Arimofewu , the director of finance and accounts in the Ministry, Mr. Daniel Akiri, the state director of schools, Lady Funmi Ighavbota , the director of administration, Mr. Benard Onyebuke , the wife of the deceased teacher, Mrs. Christiana Ufah and her daughter, Miss Onyinyechukwu Ufah among others.
