Delta State Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, has implored examiners for the generation of test item for the Cognitive/Placement Examination to cover cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains of learning by effectively generating test items that are not only valid and usable but applicable to sustain the desired educational standard.
Dr. Ashibogwu made the call in Asaba in his keynote address to declare open the workshop on the generation of test items for the 2024 Cognitive/Placement Examination.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro during workshop on test item generation, Dr. Ashibogwu said that the exercise was aimed at developing test items that would accurately access teaching and learning outcomes that would align with the school curriculum.
Dr. Ashibogwu stated that the test items generation would provide a platform for experienced teachers to review past evaluation tools with a view to contributing to the question bank of the Ministry which would be relied upon for learners' assessment.
The Primary Education Commissioner told the participants that their selection was based mainly on their previous performances , trustworthiness, reliability and diligence, adding that they should uphold the ethics, integrity, confidentiality and credibility in the conduct of examination.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Director of Examinations, Mrs. Clementina Ojumah described the resource persons as specialists in their subject areas, stressing that it was expected that they would generate credible, reliable and valid test items.
Mrs. explained that each participant was expected to generate fifty (50) objective questions and five (5) essay questions drawn from the subject curriculum.
In their separate lecture presentations on new subject curriculum areas and the guidelines on generation of test items, a former Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, Dr. Godwin Edozie, represented by the Head, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Federal College Education (Technical), Asaba, Dr. A. F Ayo-Vaughan and Professor P. U Osadebe represented by Dr. Morrison Jessa of the Department of Guidance and Counseling, Delta State University, Abraka said that advised examiners to narrow their questions within the curriculum.
The resource persons advocated for the use of sequential approach in curriculum implementation starting from the primary one , noting that it was the best approach to implement the new curriculum in test item generation , even as he said that the Ministry was saddled with the responsibility of determining the weighting formula in the assessment of the learners.
