As the world celebrate the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child, the need for stakeholders in the society and governments at all levels to adequately empower and support the girls child to accessible, safe and affordable quality education so as to realize their potentials has been brought to the fore .
The Delta State Coordinator of a Civil Society Action Coalition Education for All (CSACEFA) , Impact Keneboh stated this at Ugbolu , Oshimili North Local Government Area during their team visit to Ugbolu Primary School, to mark this year's International Day of the girl child.
Keneboh said that the theme of the celebration was Girl's Vision for Future, stressing that there was need for urgent action and persistent hope driven by power of girls voices and vision for the future.
According to Keneboh, some of the recommendations to the government included empowerment for the girls child with access to healthcare services and address other challenges confronting the girl child such as early child marriages, safe space, parent negligence in offering their girl child to serve as house helps without proper planning of the girl education,peer pressure influence by the male folk, "yahoo Boys", inadequate WASH facilities, materials in schools and access to conducive learning environment especially in rural areas.
Keneboh explained that her Coalition was celebrating the 2024 International Day of the girl child in a unique way with panelists drawn from among the children to discuss issues relating to girl child.
The panelists observed that the girl child was a female child below the age of 18 years, adding that inadequate access to quality education and health care delivery had remained some of the critical challenges facing the girl child in any society.
Earlier, the Headmaster of Ugbolu Primary School, Comr. Ogoh Afterwards told the pupils that CSACEFA was in their school to educate them on certain issues including immorality, effects of violence and child abuse against the girl child.
He said that the organization would offer them advice on how to tackle the menace which he affirmed was a global phenomenon and not percular to Nigeria alone.
In a keynote address , a representative of the girl children, described education as key towards unlocking their potentials and reminded them that education empowers them to make informed decisions, challenge harmful societal norms and break cycles of poverty.
She , however, called on girls to advocate for quality education for the girl child, support and build friendship, unlock their potentials and learn without fear .
A representative of the boys in his address , lauded the girl child for her incredible strength and resilience they showed every day , emphasizing that with determination they could surmount their challenges.
The event featured Inspiring stories of girl achievers , engaging girls in a panel discussion, empowering speeches by selected girl and boy , symposium, questions and answers session and presentation of International Day of Girl Child certificates of appreciation and participation to the Headmaster of the school, panelists and teachers .
